Why are you so Afraid?

After calming the storm, Jesus turns to His disciples and questions their fear, asking, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Their reaction is one of awe and wonder as they grapple with His authority over even the wind and the sea. This moment powerfully underscores that Jesus’ presence brings peace and challenges us to trust Him fully, even when life’s storms seem overwhelming.

Mark 4:40-41 (NIV)

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Reflection on Mark 4:40-41

In this passage, Jesus’ challenge—“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”—resonates deeply with our own experiences of life’s storms. Even as His disciples, who had witnessed miracles firsthand, trembled in the face of overwhelming fear, Jesus calls them (and us) to a higher level of trust. This command beckons us to reexamine our own hearts during turbulent times—to question whether our fear is overshadowing our reliance on His power. It’s a vivid reminder that when life becomes unpredictable, our focus should be on Christ’s sovereignty rather than the chaos surrounding us.

The disciples’ astonishment, encapsulated by the question, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” reveals that true faith is born from recognizing the divine authority of Jesus. In our modern lives, storms may not take the literal form of raging winds or tumultuous seas, but they manifest as personal challenges, doubts, or uncertainties. This passage encourages us to shift our focus from our fears to the One who calms them. In choosing faith over fear, we not only find peace amidst the storms, but we also discover a deeper relationship with the One who holds ultimate control over our lives.
